Hey, Mister, Please, Help Dolly & Me
Hey, Mister, I need to ask you something.
I can tell that you’re not from here, but do you think you could help me? My doll, Dolly, and I came from way back yonder, and now, we can’t find mommy.
Do you think you can help us?
She’s a bit short with brown hair and eyes that change from green to blue, like mine. See my eyes? They look blue in the sunlight! Bet you’ve never seen that before, huh? Yours aren’t quite as neat as ours. Even Dolly’s eyes glimmer like stars. Anyways, mommy has rosy cheeks, and she never leaves home without her face on. Makeup, that is! Of course!
Come with me, and please, help. I don’t want to go alone, and neither does Dolly. I’ll tell you more about mommy as we walk.
Oh! And she has on a pretty new purple dress with a lovely ribbon bow at the back. The top is straight, and the whole thing makes her look like a movie star! I think she took her beaded purse today, too. It shimmers in the sunlight! Oh! It’s so beautiful, Mister. When you see my mommy, you’ll know just how pretty she is. I hope to be just as pretty as she is one day. Dolly wants to be like her, too.
Oh! Hey, look! That shop over there, you’ll only see one of those here, Mister. That’s the Fit-a-Face, it’s where all the mommies and daddies go to get their perfect face matches. It’s very important for grown-ups to have the perfect makeup. I don’t know about where you’re from, but here, a person’s face is the most important thing of all.
Anyway, there’s a bunch of shops along this street. Dolly and I just love to look at all of the pretty dresses in the windows. See! That one there with bright blue ruffles and shiny trim. That’s one of my favorites. I like to dream that one day mommy will buy it for me. Oh! Look at that yellow suit! That would look well on you, Mister. The pinstripes would make you look less boring. You know, add some character to you. You’re kind of plain-looking. Maybe you need a new hat? Yours is all worn down and a washed-out brown. Even Dolly says, “Ew!” Hehe! The whole town’s so colorful, and you’re here looking all dull and lame.
You don’t talk much, do you, Mister?
Don’t worry! That’s okay. I can do all of the talking for the two of us. You know, Mister, you’re pretty lucky. Most of the grown-ups here don’t like it when strangers come to town. I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but not many are even out today. It’s pretty much just you, Dolly, and me.
Oh!
Look over there! In that window, a man and woman are peaking through the curtains! I bet they think you look funny walking around here, especially with a little girl like me. Don’t mind them. Maybe they just need to go back to the Fit-a-Face and get new makeup before they can leave home. Or maybe they need to go to the Lively Locks Salon and get their hair done. Eh, who knows! Grown-ups are pretty weird!
Oooo! Looks like several others are now peaking out and looking at us. Someone’s in that window over there, too! Looks like they’re closing up shop early. Good thing we’re not shopping today!
I just hope we find mommy soon. Dolly’s getting a little restless. I think she’s getting tired. I’ll have to put her down for a nap when I get home.
Look, Mister! Look!
I saw a bit of purple just go into that shop over there!
I think that may be mommy!
Come on, Mister! Let’s go that way. I really, really hope it’s her. I can’t wait to go home and get something to eat. I think Dolly is getting hungry, too.
Oh, it’s the eye store. I’ve never been here before. I bet this is where the grown-ups go to get their eyes redone and color changed. I know one of our neighbors, Mr. Burch, had brown eyes one day and blue the next! Mommy told me that adults like to change themselves up every now and then. Hey, maybe while we’re here, you can get your eyes changed too! You could have cool green-blue eyes like me!
Oh, don’t be a chicken, Mister! It’s not like anyone will be mad if we go in.
Hey there, Mrs. Jones! Have you seen my mommy today?
Really? She’s here?
Oh! Yay! Dolly and I can’t wait for her to be done.
Of course. We can sit and wait ‘til she’s all done and made prettier.
See, Mister, there’s nothing to worry about. Why are you sweating so much? Is there something wrong? Dolly isn’t scared, so I don’t think you should be. This place is a little different compared to the other shops. It looks like changing out your eye color isn’t all that different from changing your clothes, though.
Ah! Mommy! I’m so glad you’re finally back! Dolly and I were so afraid we’d never find you. My new friend here, Mister, helped me find you. Your new blue eyes are so pretty and clear like the sky. Don’t be shy, Mister! Say hello to my mommy. I told you she was very pretty, didn’t I? She’s so beautiful that you’ve started shaking!
AHHH!
Mommy! Why did you do that? You almost got Mister’s blood on my shoes, too. I think that’s blood?
Oh. Really? So, that’s how grown-ups get parts to make their new faces? I didn’t know outsiders have red blood, either!
It’s been a long day, and Dolly and I are starving.
Ice cream! Yay! I can’t wait to go to Iced Critter Cones! Too bad Mister can’t go with us. He’s missing all of the fun now!
