Difference between 2016 and Eternal crucibles?

Hey all, I was wondering what the difference between the crucible from DOOM 2016 (pic 1) and DOOM: Eternal (pic 2) was. Obviously they’re two different weapons, but why are they both called a crucible? And furthermore, why do they look so very different if they’re both supposed to be crucibles? By extension… what’s the general purpose of a crucible as opposed to another sentinel argent energy weapon? Like I see blue argent energy in Sentinel Hammers and Spears and whatnot…

I’m sure many people here have seen this question a lot, but I’m a new player in the franchise and I just finished (and loved) Wolfenstein: The Old Blood and Wolfenstein: The New Order. I’m moving onto Wolfenstein: New Colossus and I’m hoping someone can summarize or point me toward a good summary of the timeline as whole, older games included. I recognize that the reboot trilogy is… just that, a reboot. So I’m also hoping that someone can help me understand how or if it’s connected to the older Wolfenstein games.

As far as I can gather, the current Wolfenstein timeline begins with the Da’at Yichud’s secret society founding around 2,000 B.C. with their experiments and decades (maybe centuries?) of research and development following before they began locking amounts of their technology in secret vaults all across the world. I suppose then around a roughly one-and-a-half millennia after their founding, King Otto rose to power in Germany over the Roman Empire and used his power to secretly found his own sort of afterlife-loving cult full of disturbing medical specialists that would work toward seeing King Otto’s fascination with the ultimate ability to heal and cure, as well as reviving the dead. Fast forward to the 1940s, and after the beginning of WW2, history changes when the Nazi war machine locates a Da’at Yichud tech vault by complete happenstance. The Nazis begin recovering the technology and reverse-engineering it to strengthen their military, and General Wilhelm Strasse (Deathshead, of course) founds his horrid human-machine experimentation as well as use of cyborg-dogs. With the rapid additions of the Supersoldaten as well as elite forces and immensely powerful weaponry, the Nazis easily begin forcing the war in their favor. By the time the Allied Powers even reach a tiny amount of Da’at Yichud technology, the war is essentially lost. B.J. Blazkowicz, a member of the O.S.A (an espionage unit meant to target the Reich where it hurts) is sent on a mission to recover a folder that contained the location of General Deathshead’s fortress. His mission took him to Castle Wolfenstein, the former castle of King Otto 1 where the Nazis had set up shop as an occult research center. Some of the Nazi War Machine was led by Helga Von Schabbs, a woman who was a direct descendant to King Otto 1, and who was insatiably obsessed with her family’s history, especially with the Occult. Helga ran the Castle Wolfenstein research, and as head of the Nazi’s SS Paranormal Division, she had freedom to excavate the mass graves, mausoleums and catacombs of King Otto 1’s kingdom.

Cutting that all short, I get the gist of everything that happens from between Old Blood and New Order. I just started New Colossus so if it’s possible please only very light spoilers if any. Thanks a bunch!
