1969 Midget Battery Problems

Hi fellow MG friends :)

A few days ago, I posted a question here about the starter on my 1969 MG Midget MK3. I’ve now solved that problem, but I’ve run into the next one

My battery is a Varta 12V 44Ah Blue Dynamic. My multimeter shows the battery health at 72%.

But when I try to start the car, the (fully charged) battery only lasts for two attempts before it drops back down to 10% charge. These two attempts are usually not enough to start the cold car.

So here are my two questions:

  1. Is this even the right battery for my car? Can you recommend a better one?

  2. How is it possible that a fully charged battery with 72% health is completely drained after just two start attempts?

I would be very grateful for any tips or answers! Thanks!

UPDATE - 1969 Midget doesn’t fire up

Hi guys, a couple days ago I posted this problem I had with my 69 Midget. Many of you suggested that the Bendix gear in the starter might be stuck.

It took a lot of effort to remove and clean the starter, but unfortunately that wasn’t the problem.

The solution, which a mechanic friend of mine pointed out to me, was this: the solenoid switch wasn’t fully connected to ground because there was either paint in the way and/or the screws weren’t tightened enough! I took it apart, sanded everything down, tightened the screws securely, and also ran an additional copper wire from the solenoid switch directly into the body.

That fixed my problem! Thank you to everyone who commented!
