If you don’t find an acting performance compelling you do not have to attack someone’s appearance and make up all these theories about what procedures they got done in your mind. Acting is a craft and not everyone is operating from the same caliber or able to convey a wide emotional range instead of acknowledging that a lot of people want to use what they find to be limited acting to accuse people of getting cosmetic procedures. It’s weird, inappropriate, creates a hostile environment for actors in this fandom, and makes the assumption that what is perceived to be bad acting is inherently a cosmetic issue. When actresses have performances people don’t find compelling it becomes an invitation to talk about how they are aging in the public eye where assumptions are made about their personal life instead of criticizing their craft and how they are showing up in their craft based on what you can see in their performance.

There are plenty of terms to describe limited acting performances that do not convey emotional beats: hollow, wooden, emotionless, vacant, dull, rigid, lifeless etc. All of these personal comments, personal judgements, and assumptions are crossing the line constantly.

I personally think this ensemble works with the more seasoned actors shining the most. If you have issues with this ensemble you can voice that without making all these weird personal assumptions and focus on what you believe to be limitations in someone’s craft instead of attacking them personally that’s inappropriate. I did not think I would have to make this post.

The production head says there are 12 talismans all with different symbols that are a clue for the character.

John Griffin the show creator emphasizes that the talismans are what keeps the night creatures out of an enclosed space.

Jack Bender calls the talismans a religious symbol that blesses an enclosed space and keeps bad things out like the night creatures.

Jeff Pickner says that the talismans are a clue to the characters about what’s actually going on and the different symbols on each talisman is different intentionally.

The president of MGM+ says we will not know how the talismans work and the power behind it until the end of series.

What if at a minimum all the talismans keep out the night creatures but depending on the symbols on the talismans that determines if they are capable of keeping out or limiting the power of other entities?

I’m genuinely tired of posts saying the talismans don’t work when the creator of the show, the producers, the production team and even the president of MGM+ are all saying there is power behind the talismans that keeps out the night creatures. It would not make sense for every major player in the show down to the president of MGM+ to say the talismans have power behind them but the mechanism is not known to us just for them to have no power at all. The fact that Jack Bender calls it a religious symbol means it’s likely tied to the mythology of the show.

I created a theory that talismans are a blessing for an enclosed space and that they work by declaring that space the domain of another entity. Hearing Jackbender also call the talismans a blessing and a religious symbol for something makes me thing I am onto something.

Building on my theory that the talismans and the symbols on the talismans symbolically bless a fortified space with light I noticed that the wall paintings show a white home surrounded by red people possibly referring to the bloodthirsty night creatures that come out at night and can only be repelled in an enclosed spaces blessed by the talismans. The talisman’s symbols are dark but the space they are around are white.

It looks like the symbols on the talismans show a moon and sun. It could be the talismans serve a dual purpose. Boats need a lighthouse to guide them home. What if all the talismans are needed in the lighthouse to protect them when they leave on the boats as well as to keep the lighthouse protected to stop fromville from being in eternal darkness from the curse and that the talismans all together could bless the land as well as the voyagers.

The show goes through great pains in letting us know the 7 sacrificed children were born and killed in darkness through deceit. Truth and justice are associated with light. The night creatures killed the kids in dark and they can only be alive in the same darkness they killed them in. Hope is what has kept these children going what if to be saved they have to be brought out from literal and metaphorical darkness into literal and metaphorical light to be saved hence why Tabitha sees them in a lighthouse. We see the talismans protect the townspeople from the night creatures that sacrificed those kids in the dark what if the blessings from the talismans are needed to bring those kids into the light and bless them from the curse that trapped these night creatures in a Faustian immortality. Also, the forces in the town try to use moral darkness, ignorance a form of darkness and literal darkness to kill the hopes of the townspeople what if the point of all this is to ensure that their despair prevents them from being the light in the dark the children killed in darkness need to free them.

A light house lights the way in the dark and I think the fact the talisman’s symbols is around a water way might be a hint at the dual use they have being discovered for the boats or is related to the escape home.

The three boats could also symbolize how changing this curse creates hope for the past, present and future. This show does a great job blending countless metaphors and I think the boats are one too as well as water which has healing properties. The talisman could also bless them their journey out of fromville.

I think the talismans are an extension of some entity because the show has made it clear these entities back off in another’s domain or have limits on what they can do in another’s domain. The night creatures just stared at Boyd when he had the vision in the RV of Abbey from the music box monster while the door was open that never happened before usually they pounce on people. Once the vision from the music box monster ended they moved towards him.  I think it’s a clue about why the talismans work which is that when it’s in a closed area it is now under the domain of another entity that is not physically moving through space. This could also explain why just having the talismans on you isn’t enough because it would go against the rules of other monsters with their own domains. The night creatures need darkness to operate and the talismans have a sun symbol on it. It could be that the talismans bless a space symbolically in sunlight and that’s why the monsters can’t get in. The monster can’t bring in the darkness at that point people have to choose to which also connects to the shows larger themes.

In the first few episodes of season 1 after Sara sabotages the “fortress” Kenny’s dad was in Kenny collects a bloody rook chest piece from his dad and gives it to Boyd. A rook symbolizes a castle and a fortress. Ethan talks about believing Thomas is on a quest in a castle. Wherever Boyd brings the talismans he ensures the area is fortified so the area maintains the symbolic sunlight because a bit of darkness means the night creatures can make it their domain. Kenny’s dad played chess where light and dark have their own spaces but have their own forces. ( I’m leaning towards the show being a pun on fairy chess.)

I think entities that don’t contradict the other can coexist in the same space. A monster using music and an entity that symbolically blesses an area with light don’t contradict since sound, sunlight and visions can happen at anytime of the day. Let me know what you think.

Edit: The creator and showrunners of From have said in behind the scenes interview the talismans bless enclosed spaces from the evil of the night monsters they tied it to religion so maybe the talismans are connected to an in show old religion and that might also explain why there were no bibles until the man in yellow appeared to manipulate people.
