Musicians That Actually are Worth Making a Movie About
Music biopics often are competently directed and almost as often feature great performances, but you know how it is going to play out before you've seen it. I don't have to list off the tropes because you know them all. Some movies try to give the old formula a fresh coat of paint, for example, by making it a musical (Rocketman) or giving it a moronically large budget and replacing Robbie Williams with a monkey. But those movies still are forgettable because their stories are not that unique. A lot of people can make music, do a lot of drugs, and have daddy issues. What musician actually has a life story that deserves a movie? The story should work even if you'd replace the famous protagonist with a random musician. And it's not enough to have a bunch of wild anecdotes. The Dirt was that, but the plot that held it together still was made with the same biopic template. Maybe the key is that the musicianship should be the secondary, not the main story?
I honestly don't have a lot of ideas. Phil Spector? The Al Pacino movie covers only the murder trial, but the man's whole life is worth exploring. The Singing Nun? There's a French movie made back in 2009.
