Back story:

My company asked me to sign a letter of intent (LOI) to know if I'd re-sign or resign in a few months.

Problem:

The job title (not salary) on the new contract changed from "Senior Editor" to "Technical Writer".

Their arguments:

  • The title should match my work history list, which all say "Technical Writer".
  • They can't change the title on the contract for a work permit extension.

However, I've never signed a contract with them saying I was a technical writer. In fact, it seems we ARE changing the title in the contract.

It sounds trivial, but there are some things that worry me:

  • Are they trying to demote me, so later they have evidence for a narrative that I was of waning quality?
  • If I put "Senior Editor" on my resume, would future employers ever see this contract saying I was just a technical writer?
  • This wasn't a problem last year, why is a problem now?

I've communicated with them the concerns that changing a title has for me, but they aren't budging.

I don't want to cause a row with them, nor do I want to screw myself over in the future.

EDIT: Shortened. More details in bot’s comment below.
