Impossible to get expert witnesses

Just want to vent about a frustration here. It's impossible to get expert witnesses for most cases. Particularly medical stuff. In my state, we need to apply for funds from a judge, have them approve it, and the expert doesn't get it up front, they have to send invoices. Got a lot of polite but firm "we require a retainer before we begin." From many of them. Which I get. That's entirely fair for them I guess.

Feels like it's a joke to say my clients get equal quality representation. The people willing to work under these conditions, at least in most of the medical field, are... Infamous.

Bright side, I have found that experts from public universities in really niche weird fields are pretty open to talking, usually just excited someone is interested in what they're studying. Thanks to the one specialist on diabetic neuropathy rehab!

IAAL, and need to know if a clients story makes sense

Can't provide much information on car, because that could be identifying.

Client is pulled over for speeding. The officer says he knows my client was speeding because he was maintaining distance while speeding. No footage, no radar.

Client says that's impossible, because his coil is out, and so it's basically like his engine is down some (pistons?). I have car people in my life. One says it wouldn't really impact top speed, only acceleration. One says it could limit speed and acceleration.

Is what my client saying possible? Does it depend on the car shape/weight/aerodynamics?

Thank you and sorry if this isn't appropriate. If it's a possibility, I'd ask a mechanic to be an expert witness and give them full details, but that's a very expensive process for everyone involved.

Edits for common themes: idk if it's ignition coil? I don't really know cars at all. Idk what qualifies as an older model car? But it's def not super new. I'm a PD. It's more than just one cylinder out. Allegation is client was going well above the highway speeds in my state.

▲ 3 r/pleco

Hello,

I love the common pleco, all 2 feet of them! I was thinking about making a custom tank for them and tetras mainly.

That's got me thinking, what depth would you say is reasonable for a common pleco tank?

What factors weigh into that in your opinion? Right now I'm thinking about how if it's relatively shallow, that increases temperature fluctuations and evaporation, vs more space for the pleco to enjoy. It also impacts what kinda of floors and subfloors I can put the tank on, the pounds per square inch.

Multiple filters if it's shallow?

Hello,

On zoom court, and client sends me a private message asking what we are waiting for. Usually, zoom calls are where a bunch of cases are put on for one time, assuming some clients won't show up, will be late, will need to talk to their attorneys. So it will be like 10 cases set for an hour and a half block.

I click on the message and type back an explanation that usually the cases are called starting with private attorneys, because their clients have to pay for the time they aren't in a hearing too. But that I understand it's frustrating because he takes time off for work to do this hearing.

Welp. He sent one to me directly and one to the main chat. I responded to the main chat. I am mortified, the prosecutor and court reporter reached out to say don't do that.

Coworker says it's not that bad and I will get over it. But I feel like they shield me from my actions a bit. I'm ND, not great with social cues beyond the most basic shit (when people ask how I am, I answer with a comment on the weather or day of the week). So IDK how bad the message actually is.

The exact text I sent was:

"We are ready. I did flash on to tell them I was ready. Unfortunately, judges will often call people with private attorneys first, because they would have to pay for the time that the attorney is on zoom but not being called too. So it helps save those people money. However, that means that you lose money, not by paying an attorney, but by not being able to work during this time."

Edit: judge asked us if this should be read into the record because it's a communication made in a channel the judge is in. Just about shit myself. This judge is very particular about the rules, so coworker was just saying it's the judge's concern about following the letter of the law. Thankfully, prosecutors agreed it didn't need to be.
