In July when Tiaki Wai takesover in the Wellington region, this removes the water component of property rates in Lower Hutt, Wellington, Porirua and Upper Hutt. During this week, I went to 2-3 meetings in Wellington and Lower Hutt about the incoming water bills and property rates increases.
The IHC and Autism New Zealand turned up at these meetings hosted by Wellington City Council, Lower Hutt City Council, Porirua City Council and Greater Wellington Regional Council and warned that the Local Water Done Well and property rates increases will hurt disabled people who live in their own homes along with parents with disabled children or adults and the IHC and Autism New Zealand has warned Chris Bishop at a meeting at Petone Baptist Church on Thursday and a meeting at Lower Hutt City Council that the end result is if disabled people and parents with disabled children or adults can no longer meet the property rates and water bills, this can end up with disabled people and parents with disabled children or adults losing their homes.
At the meeting on Monday in Ghuznee St Church held by Wellington City, Andrew Little the current mayor for Wellington City admitted that the current property rates and incoming water bills are unrealistic for disabled people and parents with disabled children or adults when reps from IHC and Autism New Zealand raised the matter at the meeting and he believes Central Government needs to front up on this issue as well.
On the Thursday night meeting in Lower Hutt which included councilors from Lower Hutt City Council, Chris Bishop also turned up and on the water bills and property rates impacting disabled people and parents with disabled children or adults raised by the IHC and Autism New Zealand who also attended, 3 parents with disabled children or adults also stood up and said the following:
'If property rates and water bills go up yearly or become unrealistic, we may have no choice but to move'
Chris Bishop responded with
'This is a discussion which will be held with Lower Hutt City, Porirua, Upper Hutt City and Wellington City Council with Central Government'
The people attending reacted with shock and disappointment and even the councilors who attended also spoke up citing things can't continue like this
Last night this subject was also discussed on BHN as well:
Yesterday there was a meeting at Petone Baptist Church which was attended by Lower Hutt City Councillors and Chris Bishop, discussion topics included:
Tiaki Wai/Water Bills/Property Rates
Councillors attended mentioned that property rates are going up by 9%+ and also mentioned water usage will be taken off property rates and transferred into a separate bill. People from IHC New Zealand turned up and asked how are disabled people who rely on WINZ support/payment such as supported living payment and other payment on how they are expected to pay property rates and water bills if the disabled person is living alone in their own home or with parents when they are expected to subsidize/chip in on property rates and water usage. The Lower Hutt City Councillors and Chris Bishop mentioned that this is a discussion to be had between the disability community and Tiaki Wai, one of the IHC people mentioned with rates and water bills increasing yearly, this could lead to some disabled people who live in their own homes or with parents roughing it or losing their homes altogether.
Petone to Grenada and Cross Valley Link
The people who attended asked the Lower Hutt City Councillors why the Cross Valley Link was decoupled from the Petone to Grenada Link project and even the LHCC councillors asked Chris Bishop for a please explain which resulted in Chris Bishop looking very confused and the Lower Hutt City Councillors told Chris Bishop that they were told by NZTA staff that the Cross Valley Link had been decoupled from the NZTA and the LHCC does not have the expertise and responded 'we'll discuss this when we next meet' and he was also asked if the Petone to Grenada Link had a modelling plan for public transport, Chris Bishop responded that public transport modelling for the Petone to Grenada and Cross Valley Link is carried out by Metlink but reality is they do not have the financial resources and staff available to do so
