From what I’ve seen, most Nigerians are not a fan of Kemi Badenoch. Most predicted she’d be forced out or hated by the British people, but the opposite has happened. Her personal approval rating is higher than any other politician, even though the broad rating of the Conservative Party is low. As a white Brit campaigning for her party in predominantly elderly white British areas, I’m hearing a lot from people on the doorstep that they really like Badenoch but still hate or distrust the Conservative Party. She’s been a great and strong leader who’s gained a lot of popularity.
I’m aware that Nigerians don’t like the things she’s said about Nigeria and they think she’s offering nothing for Nigerian people, but she’s a British politician, not a Nigerian one. Her allegiance is to the British people, the country of which she is a subject, and she is doing a great job at representing their concerns. If I moved to Nigeria I would be grateful to the country that took me in and would try my best to assimilate and show my gratitude. I would not remain loyal to the country I left and would not continuously advocate for British concerns despite living in Nigeria.
Even if you dislike her politics or the things she has said - surely you must feel pride, as a Nigerian, that a Nigerian woman has made her way to the top of British politics and is now the most popular leader in the country?
