I'm working on a MacGyver-inspired video game.

Key context:

  1. Genre-wise, it's not exactly a puzzle game, or a crafting game, or a science game; my goal was to nail the experience of "semi-scientifically winging it". Therefore I think it's imperative to have the name clearly associate with MacGyver.

  2. It's going to be a lighthearted parody. The original material is so cheesy by now that I find it impossible to do seriously. Which is an opportunity, I suppose?

  3. I thought that perhaps it could be MacGruber - because it's somewhat established by the SNL spoof. But apparently there was a parody movie based on the parody character which probably creates a legal quagmire I should perhaps stay away from..?

  4. I was thinking it could be a similar name - Mac[Something], but I havent found a good one, and the ones I tested on people didn't connect with MacGyver. Case in point: there's a video game called McPixel, its thematically very macgyverish, and no one knows its based on MacGyver. So I have doubts about this angle.

I'm all out of ideas, and the ones I have are bad.

Help please :)

Game Title: MacBoomer

Playable Link: MacBoomer on Itch / (build link - download, unpack, start the app)

Platform: PC

Description:

For years, I wanted to make a MacGyver video game. I've watched the show when I was a kid, and the nostalgia hits me like a truck whenever I see it. And it seemed like an interesting challenge. Sure enough, took me a long time to get it right -- or so I think.

It takes 10-20 minutes to play through, and it's VERY rough around the edges. But it gives the overall idea.

I'd love to hear your feedback!

Free to Play Status: Prototype

Involvement: I've designed this

Couple of disclaimers:

  1. I was looking for the right balance of figuring things out, education, realism and pulp. As a ground rule, it requires no scientific knowledge from the player.
  2. I know It's not scientifically accurate. Similarly to the show, it's "scientifically adjacent" :-)
  3. You might notice that it's sometimes called MacGyver, MacBoomer, MacGruber. I'm figuring out the licensing, whether it's even worth approaching (it's usually a massive headache and might not be worth the effort). I or perhaps I'll just go the parody route. Dunno.
  4. All content is VERY placeholder (and - yes, the worst kind of placeholder).
