Sending Health Insurance Bill through a Second Policy?
I recently had a procedure when I was covered by two insurance policies, and I'm wondering if it's worth trying send the claim (after being through one insurance) through the second insurance policy. I'm mentioning locations in case it helps and can provide more details if necessary.
Insurance A: Based in Iowa. I aged out of it since I turned 26 at the beginning of this month. This insurance has my former last name (legal name change) and was never updated due to not having contact with the policy holder (my dad's wife).
Insurance B: Based in Illinois. I started this policy this year as it's student health insurance. The university requires people to be enrolled in the insurance plan during the Spring if they'd like their coverage to be extended to the Summer when they're not taking classes. This insurance has my correct last name. This is now the only policy that I'm covered by.
I had a procedure done in March, when I was covered by both policies. The procedure was done in Illinois, and insurance A was able to cover it. The bill with the out-of-pocket price is still pretty expensive, so I'm wondering if I can send it through insurance B so they might be able to cover part of the out-of-pocket portion left over. The concern is that the procedure was done under insurance A with my former last name, and I'm no longer covered by insurance A.
I'm hesitant to mess with the billing in any way in case insurance A withdraws their coverage (even though I was covered at the time of procedure) and I'm left with the entire bill since the name doesn't match insurance B. I'm sure there's a way that things should go, but I'm worried about whether I could potentially be left with a larger bill. It also seems like insurance companies are notoriously difficult to go back and forth with.
