Piston exercise from Nonharmonic Tones chapter
(This is not homework — I’m 44 years old and studying on my own.)
This may be too detailed a question, but I am attempting exercise 2.c from Walter Piston’s Harmony book (Nonharmonic Tones chapter). Before harmonizing this soprano part, I have to figure out the nonharmonic tones. That means deciding which are neighbor tones, suspensions (and which kind), what the harmonic rhythm is (ie, how many functioning chords per measure), etc. etc. Is what I’ve started to do correct? Do you think there are like four modulations here because what’s with the held A in m.3 (maybe we’re in A minor?), the held D, and held F and the held D again? Then we seem to end in the key of some sort of E.
For any clues or help, I’m much obliged!!
