I have been a software engineer for a few years now but I cannot imagine myself being a software engineer forever. Since I have entered this field, I have spent a lot of time worrying about the job market and potential layoffs. I have seen many of my friends at other companies being laid off and struggle to find a job since then. The tech industry is always rapidly advancing and I don’t want my life to be consumed by always trying to stay current.

In addition, I have become so disillusioned with the tech world. Everyone is just so obsessed with AI nowadays. What am I even working towards? Automating people out of their jobs? Automating the arts and humanities?

I can’t shake the feeling that the tech industry and I are just a bad match. I want stability and a job that feels somewhat meaningful.

Now right I am hanging tight and maxing out my retirement accounts and saving as much money as I can. It would be nice to build a big nest egg and pivot towards something else in 10 or 20 years. Maybe become a high school teacher or college professor. Just some silly dreams to keep me going.

Any advice or insight would be greatly appreciated.
