20mo screaming at bedtime after dropping Nanit shushing! Help!

My previously sleep trained 20 month old (CIO at 4 months) used to go down great independently.

Current schedule:
7pm–6am
1.5–2 hour nap

With a successful bedtime, he consistently sleeps 11–11.5 hours overnight, so I don’t really think it’s a schedule issue also has a solid nighttime routine.

A couple months ago I accidentally started shushing (woops!) him through the Nanit at bedtime and he’d fall asleep within minutes. Now I’m trying to stop this association and he cries/screams for 40+ minutes before sleeping. It’s pushing bedtime later, making him overtired, and causing early wakes.

I used CIO successfully as a baby, but it feels so much harder with a stubborn toddler!

Do I stay consistent and ride it out, or try a gentler way to drop the association? Anyone been through this?
