USYD Business analytics vs. UTS MDSI? Denied VCIS despite CFA/ACCA. Goal: Quant Risk
Hi everyone,
I’m an international student planning to start my Master’s in Semester 2, 2026, and I’m currently facing a tough decision between USyd and UTS. I’d really appreciate some honest advice from current students or alumni, especially those familiar with the QBUS program or the finance/quant industry.
My Background & Goal:
- Experience: 4.5 years in finance, currently working as a Lead Credit Risk Analyst at a Credit Rating Agency.
- Qualifications: CFA Charterholder, ACCA member (Top 1 national scorer at the professional level), and a BSc in Economics.
- Career Goal: I want to transition into a Quantitative Risk Modeler or Quantitative Financial Risk Analyst role.
The Situation: I received an offer from USyd and I absolutely love the QBUS (Quantitative Business Analysis) curriculum—it seems perfectly aligned with what I want to do.
Given my academic and professional background (CFA/ACCA Top 1), I was really hoping to secure the Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarships (VCIS). However, my application was rejected, and I was only awarded the Sydney International Student Award (SISA).
The Financial Dilemma:
- USyd (with SISA): $49,360 AUD
- UTS (with 30% off): $36,568 AUD
- Difference: ~$12,800 AUD per year
The Alternative: I have the option to study the Master of Data Science and Innovation (MDSI) at UTS, which is significantly more affordable.
My Questions: Is the QBUS curriculum and the USyd "Go8" brand prestige worth the extra ~$26k AUD for someone trying to break into quant risk modeling in Australia?
I'm leaning towards the financial practicality of UTS, but the QBUS unit offerings at USyd keep making me second-guess. Any insights would be massively appreciated!
