When Machiavelli says to judge a ruler by the people around him, he means that:

• Wise leaders surround themselves with capable, honest, and intelligent advisors.
• Poor leaders choose weak or flattering companions who cannot challenge them. The company a ruler keeps exposes his character, judgment, and long‑term intentions.
