What are the most open e-readers available? My main focus is on open-source software -- the more the better. Basically I want a good e-reader that I can flash my own software on without any manufacturer restrictions. I mostly care only about reading books, I don't care for note taking or browsing the web.
The only one I've found so far is Xteink X4:
- can be flashed with custom firmware
- there's open-source firmware available
Other than that it seems that Kobos and other e-readers can be modded but the operating system isn't open-source which sucks.
There seem to be some OSes for Kobos but:
- inkbox/quill - transitioned to PineNote which makes me worried about other Kobos and their ability to be modded and okreader
- okreader - seems to be no longer maintained
