I play in a local community- led recreational basketball league for all skill levels. We have 40+ players. The league is for all skill levels. Skills range from former D3 players to complete adult beginners. Within the league are 2 divisions competitive and casual. People decide which division they want to play on. There’s 4 total competitive teams. For game days we have 2 competitive games and a hour long casual pick up block. The competitive games have refs/play offs/ stats. The casual division is basically pick up.

The issue within the competitive league is the competition and experience levels vary widely. Some people are highly competitive while some are there for fun. Participation varies widely too. Some game days teams will have 10-15 players show up. Some days 5 or less people will show up.

For the casual league anywhere between 8-20 people will want to play on a given game day. Some people that are on competitive teams will play during the casual block too.

The league has run into some issues with more competitive and highly skilled players becoming frustrated or not wanting to play with less experienced players. I think the league could benefit from more explicit competition expectations? Or maybe more experience level separation? Does anyone have ideas?
