Hoping to apply as a splitter. I’m sitting at a 165 LSAT and a 3.3 GPA right now (with three terms left). I’ve made the President’s List the last three semesters, so the GPA is at least moving in the right direction.
My path hasn’t been traditional at all. I started college back in 2013 and honestly didn’t take it seriously (hence the GPA). I ended up leaving and going to my state’s law enforcement academy instead. Since then, I’ve spent 12 years in law enforcement, working my way through roles like property crimes investigator, homicide investigator, and now serving as a general criminal/background investigator for the state.
Most of my experience has been in a major metro area, not a small town, which I think shaped the type of cases I’ve handled and the pace of the work (I've testified well over 200 times in major cases).
On top of that, I’ve worked in a federal task force capacity with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and partnered with a major university conducting background investigations for students, employees, and law enforcement personnel. I’ve also received a few federal and state awards during my career, including recognition tied to a pretty major federal event.
I know the GPA is the obvious weak spot here, but I’m hoping the upward trend, LSAT, and work experience help balance it out a bit. Just trying to get a realistic sense of how competitive I am and what kind of schools I should be aiming for.
If it's worth anything as well, I'm a first-generation college student, Cuban American (not sure if I should list this in my applications?), a military spouse (thank you to my amazing wife), and applying primarily in the state of Florida with secondary picks outside of the state.
Thanks ahead of time for everyone's insight. I've been lurking in the subreddit for God knows how long and never posted.
