Dragon riders.

Ive been obsessed with the concept of dragon riders since I was a kid and its my favorite subgenre of fantasy. Ive read the inheritance cycle, am currently reading the emperyon (fourth wing) saga and have the pern books on my list, but I want more! The older the better, as im currently in the mood for some vintage fantasy.

Finding balance when writing about something you disagree with

How do you write about a topic you hate and paint it in a neutral light? The world im currently writing in is very religious, and it's made pretty clear to the reader that the religious leaders are pretty terrible people from the beginning. The general populace is mostly religious but are unaware of the actions of their religious leaders. While I believe religion causes more harm than good, I dont want to write a story that immediately turns away those who follow a religion, but instead makes them ask themselves some pretty heavy questions, if anything. But im finding it increasingly difficult, especially in modern society, to write anything involving religion and not turn it into some kind of rant, and I genuinely dont want to do that. I dont want to offend anyone or come off as a hateful person. I have NOTHING against religious people whatsoever. I love that they have something they cling to that gives them any kind of hope and encourages them to do good. And i respect everyones personal beliefs, as long as they dont use them as an excuse to bring harm. If anyone here is religious and willing to have a discussion, I would be totally open to the idea so i can have a better understanding and see things from your perspective and write an honest portrayal of those who subscribe to a faith.

Long story short: how do I portray an aspect of society im not particularly fond of without coming off as an angry, pessimistic asshole? Im not trying to start an argument or debate or turn away the entire religious population.
