Hey everyone,

I made a video and blog post about some of the biggest rules changes going from Baldur’s Gate 3 to Dungeons & Dragons. I hope you find this useful.

Before I continue, I want to share that I am a huge fan of D&D Beyond and the devs and moderators for the D&D Community as they are wonderful people. So this is not a criticism of them, but I did want to share a concern I see with the Class Starter Packs.

Earlier today, someone posted about the Class Starter Packs coming to D&D Beyond and a return to a la carte purchases. In that post, someone brought up how the Class Starter Pack will not give you all of the spells of the Class since it will only include what's in the SRD/Basic Rules. So buying the Class Starter Pack will not give you those individual spells.

After reading this, I shared my concerns about the lack of transparency about this in the D&D Discord Server, requesting that they make it clear up front as I don't want people to feel like they bought something that is incomplete. Some people who were in the Discord (not WotC employees from what I saw) pushed back a bit, stating that the descriptions only said it unlocked these subclasses and that it didn't promise giving you full access to the Class.

Which, in my opinion, is still not a good look. Would that be technically correct? Yes. Would it be in their best interest to be transparent about this or correct this issue? Also yes.

So someone mentioned "Now if the subclasses that they said that it unlocks is missing spells that you would get as part of their subclass, then that would be an issue."

Well, challenge accepted, adventurers.

I dug into this. From what I could gather, here's what is not offered in the SRD 5.2.1 that is a spell that's given to a subclass in the Class Starter pack - feel free to correct me if one of these are in fact in the SRD:

  • Arms of Hadar (Sorcerer Aberrant Sorcery & Warlock)
  • Crusader's Mantle (Cleric War Domain and a Paladin spell)
  • Evard's Black Tentacles (Sorcerer Aberrant Sorcery)
  • Fount Of Moonlight (Druid Circle Of The Moon)
  • Hunger of Hadar (Sorcerer Aberrant Sorcery, Warlock Great Old One Patron)
  • Mind Sliver (Sorcerer Aberrant Sorcery)
  • Rary's Telepathic Bond (Sorcerer Aberrant Sorcery)
  • Steel Wind Strike (Cleric War Domain)
  • Summon Aberration (Sorcerer Aberrant Sorcery, Warlock Great Old One Patron)
  • Summon Celestial (Warlock Celestial Patron)
  • Summon Construct (Sorcerer Clockwork Sorcery)
  • Summon Fey (Ranger Fey Wanderer, Wizard Illusionist)
  • Tasha's Hideous Laughter (Warlock Great Old One Patron)
  • Yolande's Regal Presence (Paladin Oath of Glory)

Then there's the Fighter Eldritch Knight and Rogue Arcane Trickster subclasses - I did not read through every Wizard Cantrip - Level 4 spell to check this. But if we know that if one of those Wizard's spells from this area is not available, then that means neither it is available for these subclasses.

So needless to say, these Class Starter Packs won't give you the full subclass options unlocked since these spells are not available in the SRD.

That said, I would love it if WotC made it clearer in the Class Starter Packs that these spells wont be available and thus won't give you everything in the class or make it available as part of the pack. I would love it if they stated that in general about the spells for any spellcaster.

Are they technically wrong when they say "this is what it unlocks"? No. Would it be in good faith if they made it more clear and transparent up front? Yes.

Again, not bashing WotC here, but simply sharing my concern and hoping that this will get corrected in the future.

EDIT: Looks like some of the spells that were originally listed are in fact in the SRD 5.2.1 but the name is different because they removed the name of the person in which the spell is named after. So I’ve updated this accordingly.
