General anesthesia for toddler dental procedure
Hi all,
Not sure this is the right place to post but hoping someone can provide me some information. Long story short, my 20 month old son fell and chipped his tooth today unfortunately badly enough that the nerve is exposed and we are facing 2 choices: awake and alert extraction of the tooth, which the dentist suggested is quite traumatizing for child and parents, or a baby version of a root canal under general anesthesia (taking place at children’s hospital which makes me feel a bit better). Initially I was vehemently against the surgical route as I get nervous about anesthesia but after speaking with the dentist and knowing it’s in a medical setting, I’m weighing my options now more strongly. I was hoping for input on either option but specifically if someone can link information about risks of anesthesia on children in a realistic way that would be helpful. He’s a big boy for his age, over 32lbs and quite tall if that makes a difference. Thanks very much in advance.
