Just had a pre road trip inspection done of my 2008 Honda civic, 155k miles, and aside from some other small issues I was told I would need a CV axle replacement due to a torn boot (photo attached). They’re saying I would need both replaced although at this time I’m not sure if just one or both are torn and leaking. They’re charging me roughly 1000 dollars. Obviously from the photo there is a leak and grease in the surrounding area.
I’m just wondering is this pricing reasonable? Could I replace it myself? Also how can I know and verify for my own peace of mind if it truly does need to be replaced or not. I’m not sure how long the tear has been there, but I haven’t heard any clicking while turning. I just want to make sure I’m making the right decision whether I decide to replace or not. I’m planning on driving to NC from NM so I want to be safe.
