As in the title, I'm coming up to 5 years in France on a visitor visa, once I get to 5 years I'll be able to apply for the long term 5 year EU visa. See the link for details of what I'm referring to:

But I'm worried that if I apply for the 5 year visa I might be refused and lose my right to stay, whereas if I just renew my 1 year visa I'm fairly certain to be granted the renewal. Anyone else been in that situation or have any advice? Thanks
