Who actually pays for serious contract review work and where do I find them?
Bit of a niche question but, anyone have a sense of the freelance/contract market for commercial contract review and risk identification work?
I’ve been doing this kind of work for a while now and genuinely enjoy it, which is maybe the strangest thing to admit about reading contracts all day. But it’s less about reading and more about the analysis underneath, the part where you figure out not just what an agreement says, but what it actually does to the parties involved.
To give you a sense of where I’m coming from: I’ve built up pretty solid practical skills in things like identifying how assignment and anti-assignment clauses actually operate (including indirect transfer risks, change of control language, and why “void” drafting is a completely different animal from a simple restriction), spotting the spots where ambiguity quietly creates liability exposure, understanding the real legal effect of effort qualifiers and materiality standards, and working through authority and agency questions, like who genuinely has the power to bind a party and what happens when that’s poorly defined.
A lot of it is also about translation, taking something that’s technically correct but incomprehensible and turning it into something a business person can actually understand and make decisions from. Plain English without losing the legal effect. That balance matters more than people give it credit for.
I’ve worked across US-style commercial contracts, service agreements, leases, shareholder-type arrangements, and some more sophisticated transaction structures. The thread running through all of it is focusing on legal effect and risk allocation rather than just formatting or surface-level wording.
Curious whether there’s a real market for this at the freelance/contract level and if so, where that work actually lives. Platforms? Direct clients? Law firms outsourcing review work? Anyone who’s been in this space, I’d genuinely love to hear how it works in practice.
And, maybe only maybe, if anyone needs contract review done at a serious level of detail, just putting it out there, happy to be considered. Shooting my shot.
