I work with early stage founders for a living and have for years. Some of it has been advisory work, some of it has been mentoring through programs, some of it has been with founders I met through one conversation that turned into another. Across all of it, here is what I keep noticing that does not show up in books or on most podcasts.

The advice problem is not what people think it is.

Founders read books and listen to podcasts and follow smart people on Twitter and somehow end up more confused than when they started. The advice itself is usually fine, the issue is that nobody tells you which piece of it applies to your specific situation right now, this week, with the information you actually have. So you try to apply five different versions of "what to do next" to one situation that does not match any of the examples in any of those frameworks, and you end up doing a little of everything and a lot of nothing. Knowing what is true for you right now is a harder and more useful question than knowing what is true in general.

Stuckness is rarely about not knowing what to do.

What I see most often is a founder with ten things on their list this week, all of them reasonable, all of them with someone smart who said they mattered, and no real way to tell which one is the one. So they pick whichever feels most urgent in the moment, do a little of it, get pulled into another, end the week wondering why nothing moved. The week after that looks the same. The work itself is rarely what breaks people. Picking the one thing is.

People will say yes to almost anything in a conversation.

I have watched founders run dozens of customer interviews and come back with notebooks full of enthusiastic feedback that turned out to mean nothing, and the reason is that saying yes costs nothing in the moment while doing something costs everything. The polite yes is the default response and a lot of founders mistake it for a real signal. The thing worth looking for is not the words but whether the person took an action without being asked. Did they introduce you to someone, did they ask when they could use it, did they offer to pay before you brought up payment. The actions are harder to fake than the words.

The pitch you write before talking to customers is almost never the right one.

I have seen this happen many times. A founder shows me a clean polished pitch, goes and has ten real conversations with people who would actually use the thing, and comes back with something barely recognizable. Different problem framing, different language, sometimes a different customer altogether. Same general idea, but rebuilt from what people actually said. The hard part is letting the pitch change when reality comes in, because most founders have already said the original version out loud to too many people and rewriting it feels like admitting they were wrong. The ones who let it change keep moving. The ones who hold on stay where they are.

Most launches are quieter than the founder hoped.

You ship something, you tell the people who love you, the room goes quiet, and most founders read that silence as failure when it is usually just data. The work after that silence is the actual work, which is reading what is real and what was the supportive friend tax, deciding what to do next based on what you actually have rather than what you wanted to have, and not letting the quiet push you into building something else before you have figured out the first thing. That moment is where most ideas die and almost nobody warns you it is coming.
