I think Dune has an incredible IP behind it, and I’m a huge fan myself, but I can’t shake the feeling that Funcom is repeating some familiar patterns. They’ve always been great at launching ambitious, creative MMOs, but historically they’ve struggled with long term stability, bug management, and exploit control.
(not to mention the lack of good communication)
A good example is Anarchy Online. Even with the notoriously rough server issues at launch, it had huge momentum in 2001 and kept strong interest for a while. But over time, the mix of bugs, exploits, and slow fixes chipped away at the player base until it reached the state it’s in today.
From what I’m hearing from friends and other players, Dune seems to be following the same recipe: strong concept, but familiar cracks forming underneath.
So I’m curious what the community thinks.
Does the strength of the Dune universe and its fanbase give this game a better chance of surviving the Funcom curse or are we doomed to watch history repeat itself?
I'd love to know what you guys think.
