Changing my cat’s food

Yesterday I took my cat to the vet for a skin issue (she has very dry skin) and he had me change her diet. I was feeding her Friskies (dry & wet food) and he had me switch to Blue Buffalo HF Natural Veterinary Diet. He also prescribed a medicine for her (Prednisolone 5mg), a powder dietary supplement (Synacore Digestive Support), and a liquid Omega-3 Fatty Acid supplement.

At feeding time last night I gave her the new food with the powder supplement and she was eating fine for a solid 60 seconds, possibly 2 minutes, before I realized I forgot to put the medicine in. So I picked up her food, crushed her pill, mixed it in and put it back down. She wouldn’t eat it after that. I left it on the floor for a while until I was going to bed around 11pm, just to see if she would eat it. She didn’t and I felt bad so I gave her the Friskies that I normally give her just so she would eat and I would try again this morning.

This morning she gave me the same problem. I didn’t forget the medicine, I crushed it, added the food, added the powder, and I also added the liquid supplement hoping it would mask the taste of the medicine because that seemed to be what her issue was…I put it down, she sniffed it, and she did that thing where it looks like they’re covering up their poop but they’re just swiping their paw across the floor, then she walked away. So I picked the food up. I did another serving with just food and the powder supplement and she still wouldn’t eat. So I tried again with just plain food and she refused. Again I gave her the Friskies just so she would eat. And at first she didn’t trust what I was putting down. I had to make her come smell it so she could see it’s her normal food before she would eat it but eventually she ate the whole thing. By whole thing I mean I divide the can of Friskies into 4 parts and I give her 1 piece twice a day…as well as a quarter cup of dry food twice a day - at different times.

So now it’s time for her evening feeding. At first I tried to give her the plain food from this morning that I put in the fridge but she wouldn’t touch it. So I opened a fresh can to see if it would make a difference and she did start to eat it (I gave her the same amount as I would the Friskies) only this time she only ate a little bit of it before walking away. I also didn’t give her any dry food in between so that she would really be hungry and be forced to eat the wet food but like I said, she only ate a little bit.

I’m at a loss for what to do. I’ve never dealt with this before. My previous cat had a thyroid issue that required medicine but she didn’t give a hard time with crushing it and mixing it with her food. I obviously want my cat to eat (even though she is a little overweight and needs to lose about 5-6 pounds lol) I don’t want her to starve. I’m sorry for such a long post. I just like to give a lot of details and context to be thorough I guess. If anybody has any advice on how I can successfully switch foods as well as get her to take her medicine and supplements I would really appreciate it 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I’d also like to mention that I give her the liquid supplement through the syringe. She fights me a little but I get it in. I’ve tried to put the pill in her mouth but she really doesn’t like that and she spits it out. I don’t wanna wrestle with her too much and stress her out.

As I was typing this I had the thought that maybe I could try crushing the pill in the Friskies and see if she’ll take it that way then once the meds are done I can try switching her food 🤔

Again, any advice would be greatly appreciated and I apologize again for such a long post 🙏🏽

Also, I’m from the US, my cat is 3 years old, she’s a girl and she is spayed/neutered. Thank you

Changing my cat’s food

****UPDATE****

I hope this is the proper way to post an update!

So it’s morning feeding time and I decided to try the pill in the Friskies to see how she’d take it. Well, she ate the whole thing 🤦🏽‍♂️ I shouldn’t have been so quick to change her food and attempt to give her medicine at the same time. Lesson learned. I’ll continue to feed her the prednisolone through the Friskies until the prescription is done and then I’ll work on changing her diet for good. I’m also not going to introduce the supplement powder until the prescription is done either. One thing at a time. At least for now she’s getting her meds and I can still give her the liquid supplement through the syringe. I want to thank you all for your help and advice, it’s was really helpful. Thank you 🙏🏽
