I’m realizing that “dress nicely” is only a small part of looking genuinely professional on camera, and I’m trying to figure out what actually makes the biggest difference.
If you’ve ever had a moment where you saw yourself on camera and thought “oh wow, I look way more/less professional than I feel,” what caused that difference
I’ve been feeling zoom fatigue for a long time.
And now I’m thinking of turning off self-view on Zoom/Teams completely and I’m curious how it played out for others.
Did hiding your own video actually reduce your anxiety or self‑criticism, or did it not make much difference over time?
Did it change how you behaved on calls (eye contact, engagement, feeling “present”) once you couldn’t see yourself?
I keep noticing how many people (especially women in leadership or client-facing roles) get a spike of stress right before turning their cameras on for work calls. Some of my friends say they won’t accept promotions that require constant video calls because they’re exhausted by having to “look put together” 24/7, even at home.
Really interested in concrete experiences (job field, gender, level of seniority) because I suspect the pressure is very different for junior vs senior roles and men vs women
