I think I found elder abuse and I'm not ok
I'll preface this with the fact that I'm pretty knowledgeable about diet when it comes to ileostomies and my son has SBS. Anyways let me paint you a picture:
I'm in Canada and I saw a senior man falling down with his wheel trans driver doing nothing to help (I assume it's a legal issue). I ran and caught him and carried him into the car. I was worried about him so I had him call my number with his phone so he could update me later. He was on his way to a bloodwork apt.
What they found was so bad. He had been dehydrated to the point of borderline kidney failure and admitted to the hospital for 3 weeks. He did call me. He has a 16 year old toy poodle and a giant fish tank so I took care of both while he was in hospital.
He's out now. He also has orthostatic hypotension and I have learned there's a woman who "cares for him". She makes food for him, drives him places and he writes her blank cheques. When I looked at the fridge I saw so many "no no" foods I was shocked. I know some of you can eat a lot, but his ostomy is quite new and I did learn he was dumping.
This woman has told him that marrying her would be easier and he should just move to her place. The man is widowed, his daughter died a few years prior of cancer and he has 1 step daughter left is several provinces away. I don't know what it's like to have a dad or a grandfather, I feel like I've inherited one and I'm terrified his "angel" as he calls her, is actually the angel of death.
Right now I just check on him daily and teach him basics for diet/make some meals. I don't want to take care of him. I want him to go into a retirement home. I'm very concerned and I can't just "look away".
