rock music and why i think it will change the discourse surrounding pop music

ok so this is my take on the song, i know people here have been talking non stop about it and i hope it's not too late to give my take on it, but i've been thinking about it a lot and i just want to say i really do think the song is great and will work better in the context of the whole record. the way i interpret it is that it’s about feeling like you should move on from a great piece of art you created, and about the obsession people in music have with reinvention (hence the “i think the dancefloor is dead” line). she’s kind of poking the bear because the way “rock music” glitches out in that very charli-esque way introduces this feeling of inner crisis and lack of direction, like forcing yourself to move on from something you’ve known and loved your whole life, dance pop music

the rock vibe sounds amateurish, but i think that’s completely intentional (it reminds me of those high school friends who just started playing guitar, bass, and drums and are like “let’s start a band,” and they kind of suck lol.) but what makes it work for me is her delivery. it’s confrontational, unexpected, and very her but still different (pun intended).

my favorite line is “we’re so inspired / basically all the time / we’re on to the next” because it ties directly into that obsession with constant change and the pressure artists face to reinvent themselves sonically in order to stay relevant and avoid “wearing off” or flopping, to the point where they internalize all of that and their artistic integrity gets lost along the way.

charli has also said in interviews that this album is going to be about how much music means to her and what would happen if that were taken away from her, so i 100% trust her vision and i’m sorry to the haters, but i genuinely like the song. i think people are going to have a change of heart once they hear it in the context of the full record.

also, i don’t want people acting like i’m just trying to excuse a bad song by saying “it’s supposed to sound bad on purpose,” because that’s not what i mean at all. i genuinely think charli is one of the few artists who can intentionally lean into something like this
