SmallRig cage for handheld look with non-OSS lenses (24-70 GM II) + a6700 ?
Hello,
Sony Alpha 6700 + Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM2 + DJI Ronin RS5
Hi everyone,
I’m currently shooting travel content for social media with a Sony a6700, and I own two main lenses: the 24-70mm f2.8 GM II and the 16-35mm f4 PZ. I also have a DJI RS5 gimbal.
While the RS5 is amazing, I find the footage "too perfect" and robotic for some of my travel edits. I want to achieve that organic, slightly shaky "handheld" look (like following someone running or walking), but without the footage being unusable.
Neither of my lenses has OSS (optical stabilization), and the a6700 body is quite small. When I shoot handheld, the "micro-jitters" are very noticeable because the setup is front-heavy. It looks amateurish rather than "cinematic handheld."
I’m considering buying a SmallRig cage with a side handle to add mass and better points of contact.
- To those with a similar setup: Does the added weight of a cage actually help "smooth out" the jitters with non-stabilized lenses?
- Is the a6700's Active IBIS good enough to handle a 24-70mm GM II without a gimbal if I'm using a cage?
- Or am I better off just tweaking my RS5 settings (FPV mode, etc.) even though I find the gimbal workflow annoying for quick travel shots?
I'd love to hear your experiences on "rigging up" small APS-C bodies to handle heavy full-frame glass for a run-and-gun style.
Thanks !
