Why authors are ditching character development for endless spice scenes nowadays?

Before anyone come for me saying that "Authors can write whatever they want"– I totally support that but as a reader when I'm investing my time & money on books I think it's valid for me to voice an opinion when a book doesn't meet my expectation.

Nowadays whenever I'm try to read books, seems like authors are only focusing on spice instead of character development. It feels like there's a new trend in market on who can write more unique spicy scenes. No backstory, no tensions, no emotional growth only soulless spice.

Now don't get me wrong, I love myself some unique toe curling smut but how am I suppose to enjoy when I don’t even like the characters? Their lack of personality making me DNF books. real character arcs makes spice hit different.

No matter how good a book is, if the main characters doesn't have personality growth, it becomes easily forgettable (L.O.R.D.S series I'm looking at you 👀)

Am I the only one here who feels like this?
