How do guys feel about getting flowers from a girl?

Alternatively, I'm thinking of a small potted houseplant that he could put on a table and it'd need occasional watering, a little thing to take care of but maybe that's too much responsibility already haha. We have pottery painting on our bucket list and we could get plant pots that we painted ourselves...

Maybe a temporary thing is better ??? Or just nothing at all? If guys just see flowers/plants as an offense or an empty gesture. I don't want to ask him myself because I want it to be a surprise but I can come up with something else. Thank you!
