What would cause this Cylinder Scoring in Kohler K321 from a John Deere 214
I don't know much about small engines but I do know how to work on mechanical and electrical machinery, check specs and fix things.
How bad is the cylinder scoring? I can't catch my fingernail on it but It does feel like a smooth valley when I run my finger tip across the wall. The seller stated it was used to mow last year but was smoking.
This weekend I will measure and check against specs then provide an update.i will try to get a measurement of the scoring.
Questions:
What were the possible causes?
Are we thinking this is a bore job or would a stone hone then ball hone be enough? Do I have to do a finish pass with a ball hone?
If I can hone:
Do I only need to install new pistion rings?
Does the entire scoring need to be removed?
After cleaning the valves can I reuse them?
While I'm in the engine is there any other components I should replace as preventative maintenance?
