I’ve seen many people on social media and in online communities claim they are “self-diagnosed.” To get this out, I am clinically diagnosed and had a full psychological evaluation to update for any possible remissions or rule outs since I was last evaluated for in-patient intake years ago. I also understand that my last evaluation was during the DSM-IV era and reevaluated during the DSM-V transition. I am concerned about an alarming tendency of people to assign a disorder to themselves without professional consultation and oversight, under certified practitioners and spreading misinformation online about the claimed disorder. My concerns are furthering stigmas, misleading those who genuinely suffer, monetizing under that specific condition label and promoting for clout. What is the field’s take on this? Are there studies I can find under the APA to further explore this topic? Lastly, what approach would someone in mental health advocacy need to consider to make a difference regarding this topic?
