Me (17F), Rain (17F), and Sofie (17F) have been friends since 8th grade. Rain and Sofie are childhood best friends and I became friends with Sofie through Rain. Me and Sofie were never extremely close, but I always thought she and her family were really nice.

Last year during our board exam season, Sofie found messages on her mom’s phone with another man from their hometown. It became pretty obvious that her mom was cheating on her dad. This was especially shocking because her parents had literally just gone on a month-long trip together and seemed happy.

Sofie told me and Rain about it because she was panicking and didn’t know what to do. She didn’t want to tell her dad because she didn’t want to destroy her family, especially during one of the most important academic years of our lives. We respected that and kept quiet.

A few months later, Sofie’s mom somehow found out that me and Rain knew about the affair. Apparently she read Sofie’s chats. Since then, things have been a complete mess.

Sofie’s mom has basically been trying to turn everyone against us so we don’t expose her. She told Rain’s mom that Rain was hanging out with the “wrong crowd,” even though she wasn’t. She allegedly made fake Instagram accounts to stalk us and report things to our parents. She also told Rain’s mom that Sofie said she didn’t want to be friends with us because we were “selfish bitches betraying our parents” just because me and Rain have boyfriends.

Now Rain’s mom thinks I’m a horrible influence and has blamed me for “ruining” Rain. Our friendship has been affected really badly because of all this.

The worst part is that Sofie barely defended us. I honestly don’t know if it’s because her mom is controlling her or because she genuinely agrees with her now. Rain got fed up and blocked Sofie completely without explaining anything. I told Rain she should at least try talking to Sofie because we still don’t know how much of this is actually coming from Sofie and how much is her mom manipulating the situation. But Rain says she already tried multiple times before and nothing changed.

Now here’s where I might be the asshole.

Rain wants to anonymously email Sofie’s dad and tell him that his wife has been cheating for over a year. Part of me feels like he deserves to know, especially after all the damage Sofie’s mom has caused to protect herself. But another part of me feels like it’s not our secret to tell. Sofie trusted us with this information, and at the end of the day this situation affects her family way more than it affects us.

I genuinely don’t know what the right thing to do is anymore.

Some more context: I talked to my mum about everything Sofie’s mom has been doing. My mum was actually really understanding and agreed that the situation was messed up, but she also told me not to get involved because it’s their family issue and could become even uglier if we interfere.
