Fair quote for this plumbing work?

Hello homeowners,

I just moved into a century home and inevitably coming across some issues. It started with a clogged toilet and after diagnostics turns out it’s a cracked sewer drain. They’re also recommending a few updates. So the scope of work would likely include:

  1. Dig ~20 feet of concrete from the basement, replace the section of damaged PVC, patch concrete trench.

  2. Replace 23 year old Bradford White hot water heater that has gotten regular servicing to this point.

  3. Replace water main to the house that, I agree, has some sketchy looking valves of unknown age.

All in they’re asking ~$6,500.

I did not ask them while they were here, but I am assuming that it would be good practice to fill in the area around the trench with gravel or something to support the new PVC pipe rather than having it floating. Is that a standard practice, or something I should explicitly ask?

Anything else I should be inquiring about?

How has your life improved since Ogbert invented the borkulator?

Please don’t let the fact that Ogbert is a snack with his glasses off influence your response. What sort of things are you borkulating and how often?

How to clean stains on stone fireplace

Just moved into a new (actually old) place and had some electrical work done (hence the holes in the wall). I figured the discoloration on the top of the mantle was the result of plaster dust, however hot soapy water and liberal elbow grease haven’t made an impact. Perhaps the discoloration is due to the cheapo painters hired by the selling agent to whitewash the house.

In any case, how can I get this color off without damaging the stone?

Bonus point 1: How can I get the, I’m assuming mortar, off the vertical faces in the fourth picture? I could live with it, but if I can get off even better.

Bonus point 2: Can anyone identify what type of stone this is?

Just bought a new (to me) home, actually a century home. The shower/tub on the top floor won’t budge to turn on the hot water. I have removed the set screw and tried to gently turn it with some channel locks.

Before I torque the brass off this thing and potentially cause a leak I was hoping someone would be able to provide some additional troubleshooting steps.

Notes:

  1. Cold water valve works
  2. Hot water on the faucet on the other side of the wall works just fine

After seeing the series so many times I still often have it on as background noise.

However, this line from Toofer in the Pilot has always confused me. But hey, he went to Harvard and I only attended the Royal Tampa Academy of Dramatic Tricks (before it sank). Upon restarting the series last night my ear finally heard that he’s saying “the guy’s sensibility is just cretinous”.

Am I the only person who has been hearing this wrong all this time?
