Support Abdulahi's Fight Against Muscular Dystrophy
Hello,
Thank you so much for reading our story.
We are a Somali family
My younger brother Abdulahi was born in April 2022. He is a smiley child who loves playing and spending time with family. He has a lot of love and interest, full of aspirations, but his life is destroyed by a heartbreaking genetic disorder.
He has been diagnosed with muscular dystrophy, a rare and progressive disease. This condition tragically claimed the life of our older brother at just 19 years old, and our mother also suffers from it. Muscular dystrophy weakens the muscles, damages the nerves, and over time leads to painful stiffness, loss of mobility, and eventually life‑threatening complications.
Without timely medical intervention, my brother risks losing the ability to walk, eat, and breathe independently. He may face severe pain, paralysis, and shortened life expectancy—the same fate that took our older brother. Today, he can still move and play, but he struggles with balance and strength. Every step is a reminder of what’s at stake.
While there is no cure yet, surgery and medication can slow complications. Spinal fusion can prevent scoliosis and protect his lungs. Tendon release can keep his joints mobile. A pacemaker may be needed if his heart rhythm weakens. Steroid therapy can delay muscle loss. These treatments don’t erase the disease, but they buy time, reduce suffering, and preserve independence.
The financial challenge is overwhelming. The total cost we are now trying to raise is $300,000, which will cover the most urgent needs: traveling to India for specialized treatment, ongoing therapy with steroid injections to slow muscle deterioration, and heart surgery to protect him as his breathing and cardiac muscles weaken with age. These interventions are critical to preserving his independence and preventing life‑threatening complications. For our family in Somalia, this amount is impossible to afford alone, which is why we urgently need global support.
Time is critical. Every month without treatment increases the risk of irreversible damage. We are fighting to give my brother the chance at a longer, healthier life—and to support our mother’s ongoing care.
Each donation goes directly to medical care, surgery, and treatment. Sharing our story with your community, friends, or social media can multiply the impact. Together, we can give my brother hope and prevent another tragic loss.
