I have seen a lot of devs talking on here and other dev forums about how much of a boost free reddit marketing gave their games. But most reddit communities do not allow self promotion, so it seems quite difficult?
What am I missing here?

Ahoy!!
We are 3 devs developing our first game, 7 Years at Sea. It is a turn-based, resource management adventure game where you play as a captain of a pirate ship and resolve the problems that appear on board. The game loop is a lot like Oregon Trail, but we have added combat and more minigames. And the theme is pirates, but less serious ones.
We launched the steam page like 5 minutes ago. We would really appreciate any feedback or if you would wishlist the game! (and set sail with us) https://store.steampowered.com/app/4449190/7_Years_at_Sea/
It's for an Oregon Trail inspired adventure game, but with a more cartoony vibe
