Having a hard time finding an artist name
Like every musician, I’ve been trying to find a new artist name that meets the usual criteria :
- Easy to remember/pronounce
- Not already overused
- Not cringe
- That fits my style
- That doesn’t lock me into a too-niche genre that I couldn’t evolve out of later
- And of course not AI generated
My currently music name is Maudepasse (a French wordplay based on “mot de passe” meaning “password” and my real name, Maude).
Even though I love this username because it’s unique and it’s what my friends have been calling me for a long time, I want to “professionalize” my music a bit more. A few people have told me my current name is hard to pronounce, not very memorable, and not super intuitive for English speakers, which is why I am thinking of changing it.
I would describe my music as bedroom pop/electronic pop, with influences from hyperpop, DnB and jungle. I always try to make my music sound nostalgic, dreamy and floaty, but with a high-energy rhythm. My lyrics are confessional, introspective and intimate, like I’m talking to a friend. My friends often say my music feels like "something you’d dance to while crying", which is exactly the vibe I’m going for.
I find it so hard to find a name that meets all of these criteria ! I did think about just using my real name, but I think I just don’t really want my artist name to be my actual name.
I also considered coming up with a made-up first and last name, but for some reason it makes me uncomfortable, and I’m really struggling to find something that feels like me without ending up with something that doesn’t really make sense. But maybe that’s just because I haven’t found the right first and last name yet. I need to keep looking into it.
Here are some ideas I’ve come up with recently:
- Roomie (one of my favorites because it sounds like “your roommate making music in her bedroom,” but unfortunately it’s already widely used)
- Demo Girl (I like the word “demo” because I literally just upload my songs without proper mixing/mastering since I can’t afford an engineer lol + "demo" spelled backwards is "mode", which connects to my real name, Maude)
- Daemo (same here, reference to “demo”)
- Same Again (I like it, but I feel like it doesn’t feel personal enough)
- Lost Memo/Last Memo (I love “memo” since my lyrics are literally based on my phone memos and on my everyday life)
- Messy Memo (one of my favorites too, but maybe too long and/or a bit annoying to pronounce?)
So I'm curious, how did you find your artist name ? If by any chance you have any ideas, I’d really appreciate it, I’ve been overthinking this for months now.
I know this is something every artist struggles with. Coming up with a brand name that fits your artistic direction and that you can see yourself evolving with is far from easy. But I figured I’ve got nothing to lose by asking for outside advices !
