My late elementary aged son is really enjoying shooting hoops these days. The nearest court is about a mile walking distance from our house, so for his birthday we got him a portable hoop for our driveway.

We live in a big city, houses and driveways are close together. Our street is generally quiet and a mix of apts, duplexes and single family homes.

My son has been using the hoop a lot and our closest neighbor texted me this am saying the noise is a problem for her family. She works first shift as a nurse, her husband works third shift at the airport, and they have a baby that naps throughout the day, so even though we have had a rule from the jump (see what I did there?) that driveway basketball hours are 10am - 7pm (which with school in session is realistically more like 4pm - 7pm weekdays, 10 - 7 on weekends), the noise is still bothering them. I asked what hours would work for her and she asked if we can't just take him to the court a mile away when he wants to play. Which would be a bummer because when he's out playing other kids from the neighborhood can easily join in, it's a very healthy social and physical activity for them - but I hear the noise too, it's kids playing, occasionally shouting, and the ball bouncing. The kids aren't being obnoxious, but I can't deny there's noise.

Part of me wants to tell her sorry, we live in a city, there's going to be noise during the day, and part of me is worried I'm being a bad neighbor. Reddit, what do you think?
