I have a PS5 disc edition. A while ago, I opened up the disc drive and tore it down to try to fix it. I took photos of everything and reassembled it carefully. I also fully tore down the ps5 to fix the liquid metal pooling issue. After reassembly, the PS5 still powered on and worked normally, but the disc drive no longer worked.

Disc drive symptoms:

  • Won’t properly accept/read discs
  • Eject function basically doesn’t work
  • Drive seems non-functional even though I reconnected the cables from motherboard to drive

The PS5 itself was working perfectly fine otherwise. No lag, crashes, freezing, or weird behavior.

Then later, the console randomly prompted me to update system software. I started the update, it failed, told me to turn off the PS5, and after reboot it automatically entered Safe Mode.

Now Safe Mode only gives me options like:

  • Update System Software
  • Reset / Reinstall System Software

Errors I’ve seen:

  • SU-101312-8
  • CE-101665-9

What I’ve tried so far:

  1. Updating over Wi-Fi multiple times (failed repeatedly)
  2. USB update attempts:
  • First used an external HDD, PS5 often couldn’t find the file
  • Then bought a 32GB pendrive
  1. Proper USB setup:
  • exFAT format
  • MBR / Master Boot Record
  • Correct folders: PS5/UPDATE/PS5UPDATE.PUP
  1. With the pendrive:
  • PS5 now detects the drive and file
  • It says “copying update file”
  • Finishes copying
  • Then says “Something went wrong, turn off your PS5”
  1. Tried full Reinstallation File from Sony:
  • PS5 detects it
  • I choose Reinstall System Software
  • It says “Please wait…” for around 10 seconds
  • Then throws the same error

Important detail:
The disc drive is still not working, even though cables are connected.
The front USB A and USB C ports don't work.
