Watching Should I marry a murderer on Netflix
It’s truly upsetting how the system failed the witness Caroline Muirhead in this case. The prosecutor and the police repeatedly state that they did not consider her a vulnerable witness and refer her to witness support services because she was a doctor «and highly intelligent». Even when she begged for assistance, she was on her own, with devastating consequences. In what world does intelligence protect you from emotional and psychological harm? And then there is the fact that a lot of highly intelligent people are even more sensitive than the average person.
This matches my own experience (albeit nothing this dramatic), where there is this belief that because you’re smart you don’t need support in a crisis. Apparently intelligence protects you from grief, physical illness, financial difficulties, family issues, relationship problems, work conflict, you name it. We’re just supposed to figure it out on our own.
I’m so upset on her behalf, I’m so sorry for how she was treated.
