So I was talking to my mom in Cantonese about planting some luffas. I translated it in mandarin for her (丝瓜 si gua). She then said "oh? Xi gua". It sounded like she was saying randomly in mandarin (西瓜). So I repeat myself thinking she is thinking a different melon.

Turns out 丝瓜 in Cantonese has a very close pronunciation to 西瓜 in Mandarin.

Learning Mandarin from a Cantonese background makes it easy sometimes, but it sure does confuse me too 😅
