Don't optimize the fun out of your deck.
Let's be honest right out the gate, we are all incredibly fortunate to be able to play this game, whether that's with a friend group or at a LGS.
I love playing magic. Everything about it, hanging out with my friends at the LGS, all the weird and crazy interactions that can happen in a game they're the best.
The most fun I have playing magic is with cards that are far from the optimal choices power wise for my decks. Now don't get me wrong I understand optimizing your deck can be fun and playing powerful cards has its own unique draw (I have a bracket 4 list that I've pushed and it's fun to play.) And if you enjoy that more power to you!
But all of my other decks that aren't bracket 4 are playing cards that I find silly or are quite far from "best in class". Especially my newer decks I've basically banned stapley/good stuff includes from them all. There's over 30,000 cards in this game and I want to explore them all.
For example my most recent deck [[Prava]]-[[Tevesh Doom of Fools]] could play Swords, Path and Erode but I've opted for most of my removal to make Tokens like [[Bovine Intervention]] and [[Contraband Livestock]]. Are these the most efficient? No, obviously, *but* they are still solid and better yet they always get a laugh out of the table. More importantly those moments never happen if I'm just playing a random swords/path. And those moments are what I'm after. Will I lose more games for this choice? Almost assuredly and that's ok because I'm playing cards that I enjoy and I'm not stressed about playing the best cards. I'm not worried about buying the new chase staple from the most recent set.
I'll end with a quote of my own here.
"If more people treated EDH games like a cake eating contest they would have more fun."
As always happy to hear from you all and I just love yapping about magic. Did you ever have this experience like me?
