Are they like golems, or living (organic) beings just like any other?

They have stone-like skin in Heroes 3, but are depicted with flesh in Heroes 4.

They are described as ancient constructs in Heroes 7, but since it's Ubisoft lore, I'm not sure if it's canon in Enroth-verse.

I’ve played 3 and am about to play Olden Era, but I’d love to dive deeper into the lore.
