I am struggling with this, I don’t know enough to be able to make a confident decision, and I’m hoping some folks here can help.
I own a condo in a pre-war building that only allows through-wall heating and air conditioning units. I need to replace all three of these units; one has a broken display, the other only cools, and the other makes so much noise you can hear it down the block.
The management company for the building works with a local heating and air conditioning company, and they’ve referred us to them. This place seems deeply opposed to new business. It is so hard to get them to respond, and the one time they gave us a quote, they couldn’t even tell us what brand or model the replacement units would be — yet they had a price for us. So we have no confidence or trust in the recommended company.
I have cold contacted other vendors in town and either no one responds, the company is just a front for hiring independent vendors, or they end up flaking. It seems like these businesses maybe only like supporting commercial clients and a residence is too small time? I don’t know—it’s so hard to find someone who will take our money and replace these things.
So I turn to Reddit!
We need heat and AC. I’d like it to be energy efficient, and looked at heat pumps, but I’m not entirely clear if a heat pump is appropriate for this space, and I find mixed guidance online. I would like these to be WiFi enabled. Others in our building have Friedrich, LG and GE models. No one is super happy with theirs, so we have no rave reviews to work with.
I know I can just buy something online, but I don’t have confidence in making a choice. I’m not sure where to measure to get the right size. Some of these things seem obvious, and I can use a tape measure, but since I don’t know anything about installing, I’m not sure how much space you’re supposed to leave and thus what size to purchase. I’m hoping some experts here can share some of their wisdom to help me navigate this decision so we can get some AC in place before summer hits!
Thank you in advance. 🙏🏻
