I just completed a self-guided taper from Methadone after 8 years of opioid addiction, AMA

After being addicted to opioids for 8 years, and over 4 years in MAT, I recently completed a self-managed taper off methadone. Certainly not posting this as medical advice or recommending everyone should do it this way, just sharing my experience honestly for anyone curious or going through something similar. Methadone helped keep me alive during a very difficult period of my life, and I’m not anti-MAT at all.

That said, I’m willing to answer questions honestly about:

  • the taper process
  • withdrawal symptoms
  • timelines
  • sleep/energy/mood changes
  • cravings
  • what helped vs what didn’t
  • fears I had beforehand
  • what life feels like after getting off

Edit: thank you for the gold, kind stranger. never gotten an emoji reaction before so this is interesting

thank you to all those who chose to talk to me about this. I'll be monitoring the thread for a few more days in case anyone has any questions.
