Hi, new fan here. I got completely obsessed after Coachella and now I can't stop listening. I know nobody's judging if you butcher the Dutch, and honestly half the fun is just vibing along regardless. But I personally wanted to get the pronunciation at least somewhat correct-ish for my own satisfaction.
So instead of grinding through Duolingo basics I'll never use, I built a thing specifically for Joost songs. It's called Gabberish (lol, might change it later). For each song that's primarily in Dutch, you can:
- Learn the key vocab words specific to that song
- Read the lyrics with phonetic pronunciation underneath + English translation + little context notes about what lines actually mean
- Do a pronunciation drill. You say the line and AI score you.
- Fill the gap quiz
It's a weekend project so it's rough around the edges, but I’ll keep improving it as I use it. If I ever publish it, it'll be free. The only thing that might be limited is the AI pronunciation drill since that has a cost attached to it, but everything else would be fully open.
Two questions for the community:
- Would you actually use something like this? I'm a new fan so I'm sure I'm missing songs context here and there, open to suggestions and collabs if anyone wants to help with content.
- On publishing it publicly. The lyrics licensing thing is a grey area and I honestly don't know where it lands. My understanding is I can't just publish lyrics without permission, but I also can't find a way to contact Joost's team to ask. If anyone knows how to reach him or has any insight about publishing lyrics, I'd love to know. I'm fine keeping it private if the licensing is murky. I'd rather do it properly and respect him as an artist.
For now it's just for personal use but sharing here to see if there's any interest :)
EDIT: preview is live in the meantime, gabberish.vercel.app. I’m still figuring out the lyrics licensing-thing and expanding the song library. Also made a TikTok about it so hopefully it can reach more fans https://vt.tiktok.com/ZS9S3vuMP/
